Under the general direction of the Director of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program, the full time, tenure-track Assistant Professor will begin in August 2019. Candidates should possess a doctoral degree in nursing (or highly-related field). Candidates with teaching experience in a baccalaureate nursing program preferred. The successful candidate will have demonstrated ability, or strong potential for success, in teaching with excellence across the nursing curriculum, with a focus on adult health which includes health assessment, and integrated pathophysiology. In addition to teaching, the faculty member is expected to advise nursing students and participate in the work of the department.

Requirements

Teaching/Facilitation

  • Provide excellent instruction in the clinical and theoretical area of nursing that includes evaluation and advising in didactic and clinical practice.
  • Maintain high standards and promote excellence in education.
  • Teach across multiple areas with a focus in medical and surgical nursing of adults, health assessment, delete, integrated pathophysiology.
  • Promote student development through enrichment and mentoring experiences.
  • Participate in and contribute to the team-teaching of classroom and clinical courses and model team-enhancing behavior for students.
  • Promote positive and productive relationships with service area hospitals, clinics, business, industries, and agencies.
  • Participate in continuous quality improvement of the nursing curriculum.
  • Maintain clinical expertise and professional knowledge.
  • Evening or weekend hours could be required to support programs or special events.

Research

  • Initiate and participate in scholarly and professional activities at the local, state, and/or national levels.
  • Participate in faculty development and educational activities.

Service

  • Support and participate in college and department committees and/or professional organizations to develop professional partnerships and meet academic needs of the institution.
  • Support the College initiatives to recruit and retain talented students.

Competencies

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have excellent skills in the following: knowledge of safe, quality nursing practice, and be able to relate these aspects of patient care to problem solving/critical thinking skill development in the student. Possess leadership qualities, be organized, able to deal appropriately with delicate situations, and able to effectively communicate and negotiate resolutions with faculty, students, and facility staff regarding problems in the clinical setting.

Education

An unencumbered license as a registered nurse eligible to practice in the state of Maryland and teaching experience in nursing are required. A master’s degree in a nursing field is required. A doctorate in nursing or highly related field is preferred. A background in acute care adult health care is also preferred.

Technology Skills

Computer proficiency in internet applications and Office Suite Productivity products (such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint) and email.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with and apply mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, statistics, and algebra to laboratory and classroom situations timely and accurately, either manually or by using a calculator. Ability to calculate and prepare medications in the clinical area or solutions for laboratory use. Familiar with calibration of standard laboratory equipment.

Language Skills

Strong written and oral command of the English language essential. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals in the English language with clearly organized thoughts using proper sentence construction, punctuation and grammar. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from faculty, staff, students, clients, and the general public.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to hypothesize, draw conclusions, and support conclusions. Ability to work in theoretical arena and apply logic as appropriate.
