Associate Professor of Education or Economics and Business Administration

(Commensurate with experience and Appointment determined by qualifications)

Under the general direction of the Program Director, Doctoral Program in Organizational Leadership, the full-time position at the rank of associate professor or professor of education or business administration, beginning August 1, 2019 should possess an earned doctorate degree with both practical and philosophical experience and expertise in educational leadership, leadership or business administration related to effective leadership in organizations. A minimum of six years’ experience in college level teaching is preferred. The assignment will feature teaching graduate level doctoral courses by successfully planning for institutional delivery, design, and implementing formative and summative assessments for doctoral candidates from business, government, education or the non-profit sector. Preference will be shown to candidates with prior organizational leadership experience as well as teaching at the higher education level. Candidates may be asked to teach coursework in the Department where they will be housed, based on their graduate degrees and/or expertise. The candidate will work closely with the Program Director to support the doctoral program and explore future leadership opportunities with the program.

Teaching and Program Facilitation (60%)

  • Demonstrate an ability/potential for quality teaching, scholarship, and service.
  • Teach graduate level doctoral courses by successfully planning for institutional delivery, design, and implementing formative and summative assessments for candidates in the Doctoral Program in Organizational Leadership. Courses may include Seminar in Leadership Theory and Practice, Leadership and Strategic Communication, Qualitative Research in the Social Science, Quantitative Research in the Social Sciences, Seminar in Leadership and Ethics and Capstone Courses in Action Research.
  • Plan course syllabi/assignments to meet Hood College Graduate School and doctoral program curriculum requirements utilizing a variety of teaching techniques.
  • Evaluate doctoral candidates’ needs to determine suitable level of instruction and assignments.
  • Instruct students in course content and provide learning opportunities in and out of the classroom to achieve program objectives.
  • Critique performance on various assignments to measure the quality of learning, build thinking skills, challenge students’ assumptions, and reinforce concepts to include practical application of new skills.
  • Maintain regular office hours and provide opportunities to informally mentor doctoral students to encourage developing as scholar practitioners.
  • Determine grades for assignments and for overall achievement in class. Provide appropriate documentation of grades to students and department as appropriate.
  • Utilize digital and electronic platforms such as Blackboard and Chalk & Wire in instruction, record keeping, and data collection purposes.
  • Explore future leadership opportunities with the program.
  • Other job-related duties as assigned.

Research (20%)

  • Support the College initiatives to recruit and retain talented doctoral students. Activities may include interviewing applicants for admission into the program, assessing writing samples, participating in recruitment activities such as open houses and interest meetings.
  • Conduct appropriate research to enhance general body of knowledge and provide publication opportunities.
  • Present research and other academic papers at professional conferences.
  • Work with doctoral candidates to support appropriate public dissemination at conferences, professional meetings, publications and other appropriate venues.

Service (20%)

  • Serve as advisor or committee member for doctoral candidates with their action research based capstone experience.
  • Advise doctoral students; work with the different cohorts to ensure that doctoral candidates moving through their program of study.
  • Support and participate in college committees.
  • Support and participate in professional and community organizations to develop professional partnerships and meet academic needs of the institution.
  • Support the Doctoral Program by enhancing collaboration with appropriate organizations and community groups.
  • Act as an active member of the Doctoral Program, Department and Hood College community.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

Earned doctorate degree with experience and expertise in organizational leadership, business administration or educational leadership, experience in successful higher education instruction or combination of education and experience. A minimum of six years’ college teaching experience is preferred. Evidence of leadership within higher education and professional organizations.

Technology Skills

Proficient in office productivity suite software, e-mail, and Internet sources. Ability to use a variety of digital and electronic devices, programs, and resources to instruct.

Language Skills

Proficient in communication in the English language and ability to assist students with English as a secondary language. Ability to read and interpret documents such as research studies, administrative policies, and journals, newspapers, etc. Ability to write lesson plans, respond to e-mail messages, create routine reports and correspondence, speak effectively before groups.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical and theoretical problems. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to hypothesize, draw conclusions, and support conclusions.
