Under the direction of the Library Director, the full-time Head of Reference and Education Services leads and supervises the team that plans, coordinates, and provides reference services and research skills instruction; provides faculty outreach and develops collaborative teaching and learning opportunities inside and outside of the classroom; works with Reference colleagues, the Director, and the Consortium Manager in managing the library’s electronic resources, including serials, databases, the discovery system, and the proxy server; coordinates the recruitment, scheduling, training, management, and evaluation of part-time student employees in the reference department; works with the Director and the library staff in strategic planning and policy development; selects reference materials, including databases, for acquisition. Some evening work required. Weekend work may be required on occasion, and the librarian will participate in the inclement weather rotation.

Requirements

Reference Services and Research Skills Instruction (50%)

  • Participates in the development and delivery of reference and user education services to students and faculty – in the library, online, and via telephone and e-mail. Provides innovative reference and research services.
  • Works collaboratively with faculty and the Reference team to design and deliver information literacy classes and programs; provides formal classroom instruction in various research strategies, and introduces/orients students to various library resources.
  • Participates in the development and production of user guides and other reference aids, including LibGuides.
  • May be called upon to troubleshoot minor computer hardware and software problems.
  • In collaboration with the Reference team, develops and presents workshops, tutorials, and orientations.
  • Represents the library as a member of the Reference Group of the Maryland Interlibrary Consortium.

Electronic Resources Management (25%)

  • Documents and periodically updates information regarding individual e-journal and database subscriptions and vendors; creates and maintains centralized management tools for the organization of electronic resources.
  • Compiles database and reference usage statistics; creates reports as necessary.
  • Manages the technical aspects of electronic resources, including databases, the serials linking system, the discovery system, and the proxy server, including customization and access.
  • Collaborates with the Consortium Manager and the Cataloger to execute OPAC customizations, maintain required bibliographic utility files, and troubleshoot problems with the OPAC.
  • In collaboration with the Reference team, designs and maintains the library website; responsible for making all necessary changes/updates to the library website.
  • Represents the library as a member of the Technology Group of the Maryland Interlibrary Consortium.

Administration (10%)

  • Provides vision and leadership for the planning, delivery, and ongoing assessment of reference and information and instructional services.
  • Supervises the Full-Time Reference and Education Services Librarian and the Half-Time Reference and Education Services Librarian; plans and consults on work assignments and conducts performance appraisals.
  • Hires, supervises, trains, counsels, and evaluates part-time student workers in the Reference department.
  • Approves all timesheets for the Reference department.
  • Delegates responsibilities to the Reference team as necessary.

Programming, Outreach, and Collection Development (10%)

  • Participates with other reference librarians and the director to evaluate and select print and electronic resources for acquisition.
  • Performs ongoing evaluation of database subscriptions and individual electronic journals to identify changes in content, navigation, and access.
  • Participates in outreach efforts and fosters effective collaborative relationships with faculty and staff to increase awareness of library resources and promote and enhance their use.
  • In collaboration with the Reference team, plans educational and cultural programs designed to promote library services and resources; develops and offers workshops, tutorials, and information sessions.
  • Maintains relationships with customer service representatives to ensure high quality, cost-effective services and products.
  • Participates in library and college committees.
  • Acts as a point person for the library with vendors and customer service representatives.
  • Coordinates with the Collection Development Services department in maintaining purchase and subscription contracts and records.
  • Communicates with faculty to present information regarding newly acquired databases, information literacy services, and other items of mutual interest or concern.

Planning and Policy Development (5%)

  • In collaboration with the Reference team and the Library Director, creates policies, procedures, and style guides for the Reference department.
  • In collaboration with the Reference team and the Library Director, plans and designs library user surveys. Responsible for the implementation and analysis of library user surveys.
  • Participates with other members of the Reference team to create annual goals, strategies and assessments for the department.
  • Works with library colleagues to plan goals and objectives for the library and to deal with library-wide issues and concerns.
  • Meets periodically with library team leaders to share information, plan collaborative projects, and develop policies for the library as a whole.
  • Some evening work is required. Occasional weekend work may be required. Employee will be asked to participate in the inclement weather rotation.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding, disciplining, and separating employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program and a minimum of 4 years of experience in an academic library setting. In addition, this individual must have the ability to work cooperatively in a team-based environment and have familiarity with library systems. Experience with research skills instruction required.

Technology Skills

Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite is required. Working knowledge of HTML/XML and CSS. Must have experience trouble-shooting PCs, application software, and office equipment. Experience with e-journal management and Blackboard preferred.

Language Skills

Ability to respond effectively to sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to create effective sessions for library research skills teaching. Ability to speak in public and to answer questions effectively. Ability to write reports, to develop a written argument, and to communicate effectively in writing with colleagues, faculty, and students.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with and apply mathematical concepts. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, currency conversions, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to draw conclusions from data and to make appropriate recommendations.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to hypothesize, draw, and support conclusions. Ability to work independently and as a member of a group in developing and executing project plans. Ability to work with theoretical concepts and to apply logic as appropriate.

  • Annualized salary for this position is $44,800.00
