Title Student Life Assistant, Fitness Center

Under the general direction of the Director of Athletics, the Student Life Assistant (SLA), Fitness Center, will assist the Fitness Center Coordinator in coordinating the services and programs of the Fitness Center on a daily basis. The Fitness Center Coordinator is responsible for scheduling supervision so that all students, faculty, and staff can use this facility. The Student Life Assistant, Fitness Center will also support the mission and goals of the athletic department.

General Information

  • Compensation may consist of a tuition waiver and an annual stipend for a full-time SLA
  • Tuition Waiver for full-time SLA’s is limited to no more than 18 credits per academic year; in general, no more than 9 credits should be taken during any one semester
  • Typically a full-time SLA is required to work 20 hours per week from mid-August to mid-May
  • Accepted into a Master’s Degree Program at Hood College is required.

Fitness Center (50%)

  • Opens and closes the facility, monitoring students in the facility, managing student workers, cleaning and maintaining fitness center and designating tasks to maintain the facility and additional jobs within the athletic department, as needed.
  • Assist with weekly, monthly and annual inspection of all facilities and equipment and coordinate corrective actions where needed with documentation of all activities available for review by appropriate parties, as needed.
  • Maintain and inventory equipment.
  • Assist manger in ensuring proper maintenance and cleaning procedures for Fitness Center.
  • Assist in overall management and supervision of the Fitness Center.
  • Act as Fitness Center supervisor in Coordinator’s absence.

Supervision (50%)

  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in Fitness Center on a daily basis.
  • Assist with developing budget for necessary equipment.
  • Execute special projects and programs, complete other duties as assigned by the Fitness Center Coordinator.

Bachelor’s degree required from an accredited institution. Bachelor’s degree in physical education or kinesiology recommended. Accepted into a Master’s Degree Program at Hood College required. Strong oral and written communication skills required.

Technology Skills

Proficient in office productivity suite software (such as Sportsware, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), e-mail and Internet. Ability to learn new applications quickly including organization-wide information systems and department-specific software applications.

Language Skills

Proficient in the communication of key concepts for the specific discipline in the English language and ability to assist students with English as a secondary language. Strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to effectively provide information and positively respond to questions from both external and internal customers both in person and by phone. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, faculty, staff, and other constituencies.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with basic business mathematical concepts that apply to practical situations in the modern office environment. Ability to work with and apply basic mathematical concepts timely and accurately, either manually by using a calculator or a spreadsheet application.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to hypothesize, draw conclusions, and support conclusions. Ability to work in theoretical arena and apply logic as appropriate.
