Description

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Aquatics, the lifeguard ensures the safety of patrons and monitors activities in swimming areas to prevent accidents, provide assistance and respond to emergencies to swimmers.

Requirements

Lifeguard (100%)

  • Maintain constant surveillance of patrons in the facility; acts immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons in the event of emergency;
  • Caution swimmers regarding unsafe areas;
  • Maintain order in swimming areas;
  • Rescue swimmers in danger of drowning and administers first aid;
  • Provide emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services;
  • Perform various maintenance duties as directed to maintain a clean and safe facility;
  • Clean and refill swimming pool;
  • Determine chlorine content and pH value of water with water testing kit;
  • Inspect facilities for cleanliness and report any unsafe conditions or equipment to the supervisor;
  • Present professional appearance and attitude at all times, and maintains a high standard of customer service;
  • Maintain fitness level (swimming skills, strength and endurance);
  • Participate in regular in-service training sessions;
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

High school student with six months to one year experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified or combination of education and experience. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations; skilled in the application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques.

Certificates

Must have a current CPR certification, First Aid certification, and current Lifeguarding certification readily available. If applicable, working permit. Employee is required to maintain current certifications and licenses while employed. Pool Operator’s Course certification a plus.

Language Skills

Oral communication skills to enable the incumbent to effectively present information and respond to questions from and build relationships with groups of faculty, staff, students and the general public. Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or government regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedures manuals.

Mathematics Skills

Ability to work with and apply mathematical concepts timely and accurately, either manually or by using a calculator.

Technology Skills

Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite productivity software such as Word, Excel and database software and office equipment including multi-line telephone required. Ability to use internet and e-mail.

Reasoning Skills

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to hypothesize, draw conclusions, and support conclusions. Ability to work in theoretical arena and apply logic as appropriate.
