Under the leadership of the Director of Residence Life and Student Conduct, the Residence Life team embraces and carries out the mission of the College and the Office of Residence Life, while collaborating with campus partners to holistically meet students where they are. The Office of Residence Life at Hood College fully oversees an operation of five on-campus residence halls, a small on-campus Honors apartment house, and four off-campus leased-duplexes, all housing up to 675 students. The Area Coordinator (AC) is an integral member of the Student Life Team. The AC is a professional staff member who supports and challenges residential students while providing high quality service to the college community, parents, and other partners and customers. The Area Coordinator position supervises staff, mentors residents, manages day-to-day operations for two buildings, performs administrative tasks, serves on-call, assists with emergency response efforts, and coordinates learning outcomes.


Mentoring and Advising (25%)

  • Serves as a positive role model for students. Is sensitive and responsive to students' emotional, personal, behavioral, and academic needs; advising and making appropriate referrals. Attends to the health and safety of residents in medical, psychological, and crisis/emergency situations.
  • Actively seeks to become acquainted with and support residential students by attending hall activities and campus events throughout the academic year.
  • Identifies, develops, and implements out-of-the-class learning opportunities within the residence hall system, including programming and training initiatives based on learning outcomes and best practices. Promotes leadership in the residences. Advises both buildings’ House Councils, attends all House Council and hall meetings, and provides guidance to hall leaders both in individual and group settings.
  • Actively seeks to improve diversity awareness, positive community, decision-making, social justice, and civic engagement programs, as well as college acclimation strategies within the residence halls through collaboration and development of new initiatives.
  • Assists students in managing roommate relations, including mediations and approving and facilitating room changes.

Supervising (25%)

  • As part of the professional staff team, recruits, selects, trains, supervises, coaches, evaluates, and documents paraprofessional staff (Head RAs, RAs, and Desk Attendants). Directly supervises approximately two Head Resident Assistants, seven Resident Assistants, and eight Desk Attendants.
  • Challenges and support student staff through best practices of motivation and holding young paraprofessionals accountable. Ensures completion of assigned tasks.
  • Holds weekly staff and bi-weekly individual meetings with staff and works with the area staff as a whole as well as each individual RA to develop skills and grow in the position.
  • Reviews RA duty logs on a daily basis. Coordinates Desk Attendant’s work schedules. Coordinates duty schedule for assigned on-campus residence halls, and ensures staff meet on-call expectations.
  • Meets regularly with the Director of Residence Life and Student Conduct and the Residence Life team to update on staffing and other departmental matters.

Administrative (20%)

  • Maintains oral and written communication with the Director of Residence Life and Student Conduct. Communicates with students, parents, and other campus departments in a timely and effective manner in person, by phone and e-mail.
  • Attends meetings as a primary way of communication, decision-making, and processing of information. Some important meetings include weekly Residence Life professional staff meetings, monthly Student Life divisional meetings, judicial incident hearing meetings, one-on-one weekly meeting with the Director, weekly RA staff meeting, one-on-one biweekly individual meeting with each RA, and biweekly Student Life Suite meeting. Manages Outlook personal calendar and email exceptionally-well.
  • Demonstrates ability to meet and enforce deadlines, take initiative, and work independently to carry out complex assignments while being detail-oriented.
  • Values the importance of and actively seeks to network with others to learn and implement best practices. Maintains active relationships with Residence Life professional associations, including attendance, participation and/or presentations at regional/state conferences.
  • Exhibits a commitment to a student-centered approach, demonstrating initiative in reaching out and building relationships. Is a visible, approachable, and accessible on-campus professional staff presence. Is available and interacts with students, staff, and faculty on a daily basis. Maintains scheduled office hours.
  • Plans and implements RA training programs as necessary. Assists with room selection process.
  • Serves as a designated project manager to accomplish departmental mission and goals, including three or more of the following areas: summer housing and conferences, RA recruitment and selection, appreciation and recognition, staff training, break housing, Living Agreement process, Room condition Form process, inclement weather programing, housing coordination, staff manual ongoing edits, first-year programming, and Desk Attendant employment program.
  • Facilitates and tracks programming in the residence halls. Oversees House Council budgets, manages purchasing card, and reconciles monthly statements. Assists in compiling and recording overall assessment data.
  • Assists with special events such as Orientation, Admitted Students Day, Admission Open House events, Convocation, Commencement, campus traditions, and large campus events. Serves on departmental, divisional, and campus wide committees and completes administrative tasks and projects as assigned.

Building Management (15%)

  • Serves as the administrative director for the everyday functions of two residence halls (one for new first-year and transfer students and one for upperclass students) housing up to 250 residents. Manages the day-to-day operations through maintaining a safe, healthy, inclusive, welcoming, culturally-sensitive, and comfortable living environment. Conducts twice weekly walk-throughs of the buildings to check for facility issues and to interact with residents.
  • Processes building maintenance work order requests and ensures building problems are resolved through regular communication and follow-up.
  • Coordinates Health, Maintenance, and Safety Inspections in each room several times each semester. Supervises and directs the staff in the opening and closing of housing at all breaks; assists as necessary with administrative tasks in this area. ACs are required to be on campus and available to work RA training and hall opening the three weeks prior to students returning in August; the week immediately preceding and following students’ departure in December; the two weeks immediately preceding and following students’ departure in May; thus time away from campus must be scheduled during other time periods.
  • Assists with the move-out process of room condition forms as well as the assessment of damages, billing coordination, and appeal request consideration process.

Judicial Affairs and Emergency Response (15%)

  • Assumes responsibility for hall safety and security and for campus emergency situations when they occur. Provides support and assistance for staff during crises and takes/makes referrals, when appropriate, to other offices/departments (e.g., Counseling Center, Chaplain, Dean of Student’s Office, Health Center, Campus Safety and Security, Center for Academic Achievement and Retention, Athletics).
  • Serves as one of three members of the Residence Life Professional On-Call during the year (including summer, holidays, and college break periods) and respond at any time if called to assist in any campus situation. Responds to and/or assist with student and campus emergencies/crises; works closely with the Director to support recommended actions; accompanies students to medical facilities as needed; works with local hospital staff to assess students' status; conducts necessary follow-up with Campus Safety, local agencies, and/or parents and staff as needed; assists with implementation of emergency response plans and actions.
  • Understands, interprets, and supports all college policies. Encourages behavior consistent with the Code of Conduct, and holds students accountable for their actions. Communicates, interprets, and enforces residence hall and Student Handbook policies and procedures. Maintains a positive community by explaining community standards and assisting residents in meeting those standards. Recommends changes in policies and procedures.
  • Addresses behavioral concerns on a proactive level within the residences. Challenges, confronts, and follows up on vandalism and negative behavior.
  • Serves as an administrative hearing officer. Timely and appropriately assigns charges, hears judicial cases, administers and follows up on sanctions, and utilizes conduct software.

Education and Experience

Master’s degree required, preferably in higher education, business, or counseling. Experience attending or working at a small residential institution is preferred. Experience working with college students is preferred. Customer service experience, great interpersonal skills, supervisory experience, and excellent communication skills are preferred. Knowledge of student development theories and their practical application is preferred.


Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite programs, such as, Word, Excel, etc., e-mail, Internet, social media platforms, and mobile technologies. Ability to learn new software programs quickly.

Language Skills

Proficient in the communication of key concepts for the specific discipline in the English language and ability to assist students with English as a secondary language. Strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to communicate regularly with updates while being closely supervised. Ability to effectively provide information and positively respond to questions from both external and internal customers both in person and by phone. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, faculty, staff, and other constituencies.

Reasoning Ability

Strong ability to search for and discover problems. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to hypothesize, draw conclusions, and support conclusions. Ability to work in theoretical arena and apply logic as appropriate.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with and apply basic mathematical concepts timely and accurately, either manually by using a calculator or a spreadsheet application. Ability to use mathematical concepts in developing reports.


The employee must have a valid United States driver’s license and a good driving record.

Live-In Staff Component (Staff Apartment and Dining Plan)

In order to more easily provide student support and attend campus events after hours and on weekends, the Area Coordinator is required to live in a lightly-furnished, small campus apartment within one of the residence halls. Only the employee is entitled to live in the provided accommodations unless special arrangements are approved by the Dean of Students. It is important for the AC to maintain boundaries within their private apartment in order to promote balance from campus support responsibilities. It is paramount to possess the ability to successfully cohabitate in the place of employment. Area Coordinators will both live and work in the same residential area (or nearby), which is near their staff and students. It is vital that the AC be able to successfully perform expected duties in addition to sustaining a well-balanced personal life. Being visible and having regular student and staff interaction while eating daily in the dining hall (during the academic year when the departmentally-provided meal plan is in effect when dining hall is open) is vital to build and maintain important relationships and continued communication.
