Title Assistant Professor of Public Relations

Under the general direction of the Program Director and Department Chair of English and Communication Arts, the Assistant Professor of Public Relations will teach in both the Communication Arts and Integrated Marketing Communication programs. Courses will include but are not limited to Introduction to Public Relations, Writing for PR, PR Campaigns, Social Media, and Communications Research. The candidate should be prepared to teach these courses across a variety of applications including print, video, and digital communications. Knowledge and experience in any of the following areas would also be helpful: communications law and ethics, global public relations, strategic communications, and advertising.

The position begins in August 2018.

The course load is 21 credits annually, and departmental duties will include developing new courses and course content, advising students, supervising academic internships and PRSSA, and other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Faculty at Hood are expected to demonstrate an ability or potential for quality teaching, scholarly research, and service. Other duties may be assigned.

Teaching/Facilitation

  • Teach core public relations and integrated marketing communications courses.
  • Teach and develop additional courses including strategic communications and case studies in public relations.
  • Prepare students for careers in public relations and integrated marketing.
  • Design courses and develop course syllabi and assignments to meet Hood College and departmental curriculum requirements.
  • Advise PRSSA and participate in its activities.
  • Instruct students in course content and provide learning opportunities in and out of the classroom to achieve course objectives.
  • Evaluate students' learning styles, interests, aptitudes, temperament, and individual characteristics to determine suitable level of instruction and assignments.
  • Encourage class participation and provide assistance as appropriate to students in completing class assignments. Manage classroom interactions and establish and maintain a climate that encourages learning.
  • Supervise student internships in public relations and integrated marketing.
  • Maintain regular office hours and contact with students as appropriate.

Scholarship

  • Conduct field-specific research to enhance general body of knowledge and provide publication opportunities, or avidly pursue other forms of professional development.
  • Conduct research with students, as appropriate.
  • Present research findings and other academic papers at national or professional conferences.
  • Participate in the communications community.

Service

  • Support and participate in college committees and/or professional organizations to develop professional partnerships and meet the academic needs of the institution.
  • Support the College initiatives to recruit and retain talented students.
  • Participate as an active member of the Hood College community.

Education and/or Experience

A Ph.D. in Public Relations, Mass Communications, or a related field and professional experience is preferred. Teaching experience at the college level is desired. Candidates with a master’s degree in public relations or a related field, significant professional experience, and the ability to develop a research agenda will be considered. Experience for all candidates should include but not be limited to, public relations agency work, corporate marketing, supervision of PR campaigns, social media coordination, crisis management, event planning and execution, creation of press materials, and cultivation of strong media contacts.
