General Information

  • Compensation for this position is $30.00 per hour
  • Part-time, Temporary, Non-benefited Position

Under the direction of the Director of Counseling Center, the part-time, temporary, non-benefited Staff Counselor is primarily responsible for providing clinical services and psycho-educational programming to members of the Hood College community. The Staff Counselor works collaboratively with other departments on campus, as needed, and supports services provided by other members of the Student Life Team.

Requirements

Clinical Responsibilities (75%)

  • Individual, couples, and group counseling within a short-term and time limited scope of service.
  • Facilitate off-campus referrals for ongoing psychotherapy.
  • Establish and facilitate support/therapy groups.
  • Engage in consultation with faculty, staff, families, students, and others about mental health concerns impacting students.
  • Respond to psychological and campus-wide emergencies and follow emergency protocols.
  • Provides suicide risk assessment and intervention, crisis response intervention, care coordination, and working with high risk/high acuity students.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Psycho-educational Responsibilities (15%)

  • Create and participate in outreach, psycho-educational and wellness programming.
  • Develop wellness resources, such as articles, brochures and newsletters.

Administrative Responsibilities (10%)

  • Complete data collection instruments and follow other office procedures.
  • Maintain accurate records within legal and ethical guidelines; complete documentation and case management in a timely manner.
  • Ability to problem solve, work independently on tasks, create team cohesion, and meet deadlines.
  • Available for possible weekend/evening hours for psycho-educational programming, emergencies, or Student Life Team events.
  • Weekly supervision with Director.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Must be available as on-call staff for emergencies and office coverage;
  • Daily contact with students;
  • Possible weekend/evening hours for psycho-educational programming, emergencies, or Student Life Team events.

Education and/or Experience

Master’s degree in counseling, counseling psychology, or social work and licensure in the state of Maryland at LCPC or LCSWC level required. Knowledge areas include: brief/short-term treatment modalities, crisis intervention, suicide assessment, developmental and resiliency theory, DBT skills preferred, development of psycho educational workshops, and excellent oral and written communication skills. Experience working with emerging adults in a college setting is preferred. Commitment to advancing diversity and social justice for underserved populations.

Technology Skills

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite software (such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, etc.), e-mail and Internet. Ability to design workshop flyers and promotional materials.

Language Skills

Strong oral and written communication skills with ability to effectively provide information and positively respond to questions from both external and internal stakeholders.

Mathematical Skills

Strong statistical and analytical skills preferred. Ability to work with and apply statistical and mathematical concepts timely and accurately, either manually, by using a calculator, or a spreadsheet package (such as Excel); demonstrated knowledge of assessment including research design, data collection, data analysis, and reporting; and experience working with a variety of databases; and the use of computer applications to manipulate and analyze data is required.
