Title Console Attendant/Dispatcher (On-Call)

Under the direction of the Communications Center Supervisor, the on-call Console Attendant/Dispatcher will provide high quality service to internal and external customers; operate communication systems (such as telephone and two-way radio); monitor security access and emergency systems and initiate routine and emergency calls.


Console Attendant (75%)

  • Answers incoming calls, greeting callers, providing information, transferring calls and/or taking messages as necessary;
  • Operates communication systems, such as multi-line telephone console, two-way radio;
  • Initiates routine calls and route emergency calls appropriately;
  • Records messages, suggesting rewording for clarity and conciseness;
  • Relay and route written and verbal messages;
  • Acts as College receptionist to outsiders visiting the campus.

Dispatcher (20%)

  • Operates and manages the College’s fire alarm system, altering Security and City Central alarm in the event a fire alarm is activated;
  • Operates a two-way radio to dispatch calls to security staff on duty to receive and communicate information; while using prescribed radio procedures;
  • Monitors alarm systems in order to ensure that secure conditions are maintained;
  • Operates the College’s Security Access System.

Administrative Duties (5%)

  • Provides information about the College, as authorized;
  • Familiar with College schedules, operating regulations, and locator files;
  • Administers keys to buildings, rooms, and vehicles to authorized persons.

Education and/or Experience

High school diploma or GED and one year of relevant experience or combination of education and experience required.

Language Skills

Strong written and oral command of the English language essential. Produce written documents in the English language with clearly organized thoughts using proper sentence construction, punctuation and grammar. Communicate in the English language by phone or two-way radio and in person in a one-to-one or group setting. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers and/or employees of the College.

Technology Skill

Ability to monitor computer aided dispatching systems. Computer proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, with Microsoft Word. Proficient with internet and email.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with basic business mathematical concepts that apply to practical situations in the modern office environment. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to work independently and as a team member with limited supervision. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a number of variables in diverse situations. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions and information furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to work in theoretical arena and apply logic as appropriate.
