Title Visiting Assistant Professor of Nursing

Description

Under the general direction of the Director of Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program, the full-time visiting assistant professor will provide students with instruction of the highest standards, evaluate student progress, assist in preparation of syllabi, assist in activities furthering the work of the institution, communicate necessary information to students, provide academic advice to students as needed and serve on standing and ad hoc committees as needed. This position includes teaching Fundamentals of Nursing.

Requirements

Teaching/Facilitation

  • Provide competent instruction in the clinical and theoretical area of nursing that includes evaluation and advising in didactic and clinical practice.
  • Maintain high standards and promote excellence in education.
  • Teach across multiple areas with a focus in medical and surgical nursing of adults, health assessment, critical care nursing, pathophysiology, and pharmacology.
  • Promote student development through enrichment and mentoring experiences.
  • Participate in and contribute to the team-teaching of classroom and clinical courses and model team-enhancing behavior for students.
  • Promote positive and productive relationships with service area hospitals, clinics, business, industries, and agencies. • Provides service, including committee membership, at the program, department, and college levels as applicable.
  • Maintains clinical expertise and professional knowledge.
  • Provides curriculum instruction and program development.

Competencies

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have excellent skills in the following:

  • Knowledge of patient medications, treatments, and diagnoses, and be able to relate these aspects of patient care to problem solving/critical thinking skill development in the student.
  • Possess leadership qualities, be organized, able to deal appropriately with delicate situations, and able to effectively communicate and negotiate resolutions with faculty, students, and facility staff regarding problems in the clinical setting.

Education

An unencumbered license as a registered nurse eligible to practice in the state of Maryland and teaching experience in nursing are required. A master’s degree in a nursing field is required. A doctorate in nursing or highly related field is preferred. A background in acute care adult health care is also preferred.

Technology Skills

Computer proficiency in internet applications and Office Suite Productivity products (such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint) and email.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with and apply mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, statistics, and algebra to laboratory and classroom situations timely and accurately, either manually or by using a calculator. Ability to calculate and prepare medications in the clinical area or solutions for laboratory use. Familiar with calibration of standard laboratory equipment.

Language Skills

Strong written and oral command of the English language essential. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals in the English language with clearly organized thoughts using proper sentence construction, punctuation and grammar. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from faculty, staff, students, clients, and the general public.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to hypothesize, draw conclusions, and support conclusions. Ability to work in theoretical arena and apply logic as appropriate.
