Description Under general supervision, the PAT Staff Nurse provides direct nursing care in accordance with the established policies and procedures of Southwestern Medical Center to patients of all ages undergoing surgical intervention, with special emphasis placed on sterile technique, perioperative nursing care and provision of appropriate equipment.

Position Requirements:

A. Licensure/Certification/Registration:
Oklahoma State Board of Nursing License for Registered Nurses
BLS Certification


B. Education:
Graduate from an accredited professional nurse program (diploma, ADN, BSN).

C. Experience:
Minimum of one year clinical nursing.

D. Special qualifications:
Good oral and written communication skills. Good computer skills. Good interpersonal skills.

Tasks:
1. Assemble all Surgery and Endo charts which includes labeling, filling out consents, obtaining orders, current H&P’s, pull all labs, CXR, EKG’s make sure all WNL or obtain farther orders if needed.
2. Make sure Pharmacy has orders and info needed.
3. Call and confirm all Surgery pts.day before and answer last minute questions. Make sure have check in times, understand NPO status and meds may take. Phone interview if not seen in office or if repeat injection. (Normally see all surgery pts. Except for Aycock and Snell’s that don’t require preop, and dental’s that don’t preadmit
4. Call and confirm Endoscopy pts. If accurate phone number is in computer system. Do phone interview if pt has time and vice versa. If not I make sure they understand bowel prep and have check in time and bring current med list. (I have scheduled appointments with all of Le and Igwe’s therefore they are all seen in my office prior to procedure)
5. Serve as contact person for Surgeon’s offices and Patients.
6. Coordinate with DHS/Surgeon’s office to get consents signed and appropriate paper work needed( this is required a lot with dentals)
7. Make sure all surgery pts. Have preop appointment at which I obtain health history, current problems, medications, etc.. Screen all pts. for clearances, farther workup needed etc.
8. Have scheduled appointments with pts. in am, but often see pts. throughout day(esp. when Dr Pag has office).
9. Keep Surgeons offices stocked with surgery folders, which include Hospital, Preop, infection control info etc.

Service/Quality Excellence:
Participates in the Hospital’s Service Excellence Program designed to improve patient care, employee and physician satisfaction. Participation includes knowledge of HCAHPS (Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Systems and Providers, which measures patient’s perceptions of care received and Core Measure Set, which measures performance of patients’, care based on medical research. Participates
In hospital wide and unit specific performance project.



Degree of Supervision Required:
Involves general guidance and direction by the clinical supervisor and/or department director. The staff nurse is expected to perform most duties independently and in accordance with established departmental and hospital policies and procedures.

Ages of Patients Served:
This position requires competence in assessment, treatment, and/or care for the age groups indicated. The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based on physical, psycho/social, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her assigned service area. The skills and knowledge needed to provide such care may be gained through education, training, and/or experience.
